Surveys conducted in 1982 and 2002 show different pictures of what motivate students to choose a college or university in the UK Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant

The pie charts present the findings of a survey about what British students considered when choosing a tertiary institution in the years of 1982 and 2002.

In both years, university applicants in the UK paid closer attention to suitable courses and degrees than to any other factor. In the past, people regarded tuition costs as the second most crucial reason, while 20 years later, people appreciated the reputation of the institution alternatively.

The availability of suitable courses and degrees was the most important consideration in both years, although the proportion of students who chose this factor dropped from 40% to 34%. Though British people regarded costs as a vital reason while choosing a college in 1982, they gave it little consideration after 20 years. Besides, fewer people considered the location of universities as an important factor, which fell from 19% to 16%.

Different patterns were seen in the changes to the other three factors. Whether the institution is well-known has become a crucial factor over the 20 years, which increased fivefold to a quarter. And the proportion of the factor amenities, social activities, and sports facilities recorded a significant increase from 5% to 18% over the 20 years. However, the proportion of admission criteria remains virtually unchanged from 1982 to 2002 (2% and 3% respectively in these two years).
