Overall, Mandarin Chinese has the largest total number of speakers but, considering the non native speakers, it is English the most spoken language. Instead, Portuguese reveals to be the least spoken language taking into account both the native and non native speakers.
As concerned to the main spoken languages, Mandarin Chinese and English, the total number of speakers are respectively 1.090 billion and 942 million. However, among Mandarin Chinese speakers 190 million are not Chinese, while a great amount of foreign people (603,000,000) speak English as an additional language.
Under Mandarin Chinese and English, the third most spoken language is Hindi with a total of 490,000,000 speakers whom 120,000,000 are non-native, which is almost the double of Spanish that accounts a total amount of 420 million of people.
Less than 230 million of inhabitants of the world speak Arabic and Portugues with Portuguese being the least spoken language among all the languages (only 213 million).
