The table compares the six ranking languages in terms of the number of first language users, the number of foreign learners and total number of speakers in each of languages.
Overall, Mandarin Chinese has the highest figure for native speakers while English is the most popular international language which has the largest quantity of foreign learners.
As can be seen from the table, Mandarin Chinese records 900 million people who use this language as their mother tongue, followed by Hindi, with the figure being significantly lower, at 370 million. Spanish is the third language which has 350 million first language users. Below 350 million in each of English, Arabic and Portuguese: 339 million, 206 million and 203 million respectively.
According to the table, the quantity of second language learners in English is the highest, at 603 million, followed by 190 million in Mandarin Chinese. Hindi records 120 million, this language has the smallest disparity between the number of native speakers and the number of speakers as additional language, with the former figure tripling the latter one. Not many people learn Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese compared to the other languages, the figures for those are: 70 million, 24 million and 10 million respectively.
