The table illustrates the features of transport by railway in four countries according to three criteria in 2007. The general overview is that the USA was always surpassed by other countries in the usage of passenger transport.
To specify, Japanese people use rail transport most frequently with 27% of population, followed by the UK with 5.9%. Surprisingly, while 5.5% of Italian people traveled by rail, only 0.3% of Italian people used this transport mean.
On the other hand, in the number of passenger kilometres per head of population, Japan still ranked first with 1980 kilometres. Whereas, the distances of passenger traveling by railway in the UK and Italy are similar with 770 kilometres and 780 kilometres respectively. The smallest number of kilometres was seen in the USA with only 80 kilometres.
In addition, interesting only in the cargo carried by rail transport, did the USA exceeded other countries by 1000 times with 2,820 billion tons. The opposite was true with the rest, which only had about over 20 billion tons carried by railway.
