The table below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities in year 2010.
The table compares the underground railways in 6 cities related to their open dates, route lengths, and the number of people using them yearly.
It is clear that three older underground systems, namely, London, Paris, and Tokyo cover longer distances and serve significantly more passengers than the three newer ones. In addition, more people travel by Tokyo railway than by the others.
The London Underground is the oldest system, opening in 1863. With 394 km of route, it is the longest railway and can carry 775 million passengers. Paris is the second largest system, with only half the route length of the London underground. However, it serves more people. While Tokyo has only the third longest railway line, it is the most used (1927 million passengers per year)
As for the three newer networks, Kyoto's route length is the shortest, with only 11 km, compared with 28 km and 126 km for Los Angles and Washington DC underground systems. It is worth noticing that the Kyoto system gives transportation to only 45 million travelers. This figure is 5 million lower than that of Los Angles, the youngest system. The number of passengers for the Washington DC network ranks fourth after Tokyo, Paris and London.
