The table below gives information about the use of different modes of transport in Shanghai in 1996, and one possible projection (high motorization scenario) for their use in 2020.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
The table depicts the usage of six different transportation methods in Shanghai in 1990, and the prediction for their use 24 years later in 2020. Overall, the percentages of passenger for most transportation are predicted to decline dramatically, whereas train and car will likely to see a positive trend.
According to the table, bus was the most frequented transportation in 1996 with 39% of the total of passenger kilometers, however this figure will possibly decrease to 22% in 2020. Likewise, scooter is expected to fall sharply from 12% to 7% during the same time period. Interestingly, non-motorized modes of transport are projected to bottom out at 3%, although both walking and bicycle were recorded at 7% and 27% respectively in the past.
In contrast, it is anticipated that car will be the highest contributing transportation method with 52% in 2020, more than tripled its given percentage in 1996 (15%). A similar pattern can be seen for train, which did not operate in the past but forecast to be responsible for 13% of the total usage.
