The chart gives information about the type of families that live in poverty in Australia and the proportions of them in 1999.
6% of single and aged people live in poverty while the percentage of aged couples is not only much lower than single and aged people but also the lowest one with 4% of the proportion. That means 54,000 and 48,000 single and aged people and aged couples are living in poverty respectively. In contrast, singles that have no children live way more in poverty than aged ones with 19% which is 359,000 people.
Couples with no children proportion are lower than singles with no children. There are 211,000 couples with no children who live in poverty. The greatest percentage number for people living in poverty is 21% who are categorised as sole parents which means 232,000 of them living in poverty. Even though the percentage of parents that are defined as couples is 12%, the number is the greatest with 933,000 people.
In general, all households' poverty percentage is 11%. There are 1,837,000 people that live in poverty in Australia.
