The table below shows the results of a survey of the average number of cars per hour using three suburban roads during working hours in a ten-year pollution monitoring programme. Traffic calming (methods of slowing down traffic, e.g by building raised areas across road) was introduced in Harper Lane at the beginning of 1999. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparation where relevant.
This table indicates information about three different roads in the outskirts and the regular figures of cars utilized per hour on each road around the time of working, which are the outcomes of a survey in a pollution monitoring programme over a span of 10 years.
What stands out from the data is that the average numbers of cars used per hour on Great York Way and Long Lane are obviously higher than these numbers on Harper Lane. It can be immediately seen that the usual figure of cars driven per hour on Harper Lane is remarkably lower over the later half of the time period.
Looking at the table, we can see that the regular numbers of cars per hour using Great York Way and Long Lane experienced a sharp increase. At the beginning, the average figure of cars on Great York Way was significantly higher than this figure on Long Lane by 200 cars. However, after 10 years, the usual number of cars on Long Lane reached a peak up to 1400 cars in 2002, which was an approximately twofold growth.
Whereas, on Harper Lane, the average number of cars used per hour witnessed a gradual rise from 1993 to 1998, with 82 cars at first and 915 cars at the end. From the beginning of 1999, traffic calming was put in practice on Harper Lane; therefore, there was a steep drop in driving cars on this road, with nearly 200 cars driven per hour in the following years.
