The table below shows social and economic indicators for four countries in 1994, according to United Nations statistics.
Describe the information shown below in your own words. What implications do the indicators have for the countries?
The table provides the social and economic statistics for four countries, surveyed by the United Nations in 1994, namely Canada, Japan, Peru, and Zaire.
Looking from all perspectives, it is readily apparent that the data was measured by the same categories, in terms of annual income, life expectancy, calories supply, and literacy rate in all countries. Regarding the first indicator, people in Japan had the highest annual wage among the countries, earning $15,760 per individual. It was followed by Canada with $11,100 salary per person, but the rest of the countries had an income of not more than $1000.
Likewise, life expectancy was the highest figure in Japan, and the rest is followed the same trend as the first category. Interestingly, calories consumption in Canada is higher than in any other country on the list. Japan stood as the second place in that category, followed by Peru and Zaire respectively. According to the chart, the citizens of Zaire had the lowest literacy rate with only 34%, whilst the rate of the two states, Canada and Japan, had three times the percentage of Zaire.
To sum up, it can be observed that Canada and Japan had outstanding figures in all categories, portraying their high standard of social and economic situations whereas Peru and Zaire had significantly lower numbers, depicting their struggles in local communities.
