The table illustrates the hectares of woodlands in six different areas of the world during 1990, 2000 and 2005. Overall, Europe had high forested land, while Oceania had the least area under forests.
From the chart, it is evident that Europe and Asia are the only two countries with an upward trend in forest year during the 15 year time period. In Europe, the woodland area showed a significant rise from 989 million hectares in 1990 to 1001 million hectares in 2005 which indicates an increase up to 12 million hectares. Similarly, there is a marginal improvement from 576 million hectares to 584 million hectares in Asia.
All the remaining countries showed a downfall in the forest area. Regarding Africa and South America, the figures accounted for 749 and 946 million hectares respectively. However, it fell down by 58 million hectares in Africa and by 64 million hectares in South Africa during 2005. Meanwhile, the area under woodlands reduced by about 2-3 million hectares in Oceania and North America.
