The table shows the proportion of female and male aged 15 and aged 75 from 1961 to 2011 in the UK.
The table compares the percentage of males and females in the UK between the age of 15 and 75 in 2010.
As can be clearly seen, while the number of younger age group experienced a downward trend, the reverse was true for the other. There was also a shift in the figure for both genders.
In 1961, among over 36 million people, those aged 15 accounted for 1.86%, in which there were a little more females than males, at around 335,730 and 334,241 respectively. By 2011, the total number had seen a sharp reduction to 1.23%, followed by a slight decrease to 333,700 in the percentage of females despite a remarkable increase to 354,400 in males.
By contrast, the older age bracket witnessed a climb from a tiny proportion of 0.23% in 1961 to a high of 0.7% in 2011 due to an upsurge in the figures for both sexes. Particularly, the number of females recorded a four-fold increase to reach 210,100 after a significant decline from 254,900 in 1991. Likewise, male counterparts had also registered a gradual rise from 34,012 to peak at 181,300 by the end of the period.
