The tables show us the quantity of exports being transported through Rotterdam over a ten year period, and the level of taxation imposed on the goods at destination.
The table charts depict the proportion of exports being transported via Rotterdam in 2002 and 2012, and the level of taxation imposed on goods at destination.
Regarding the volumes, total exports rose insignificantly, reaching 18600 tons by 2020. However, the general trend for the volumes was to decrease. For example, the rates for Europe- the largest destination- had declined by 500 million tons by 2012, compared to the 2002 figures, and the United States decreased to 3,900 million tons. China and Latin America export volumes dipped dropped moderately by 100 and 300 million tons accordingly. By marked contrast, volumes to Asia Pacific and Australasia more than trebled, comprising 2550 and 2300 million tons in 2012. The “other” areas remained static over a given timescale, at 350 million tons.
Turning to taxation, the amount of taxes imposed increased considerably in almost all countries that demonstrated a decline in volumes, hitting 2% in the United States, China and Latin America, and rising to 8 in Europe, while the growth zones Asia Pacific and Australasia reduced taxation massively by 3%. The “other” zones again showed stable taxation levels over a period, at only 2%.
Overall, there is a clear correlation between the amount of export volumes and taxes imposed upon good at destination.
