TASK 1: The graph shows the number of marriages and divorces in the UK between 1975 and 2000.

The provided graph illustrates/ compares/ enumerates the number of marriages and divorces in Britain over a 25-year course from 1975 to 2000. In general, the number of first marriages experienced rather wild fluctuations whilst an upward trend can be seen in the figure for divorces. Units were measured in thousands.

It is clear from the graph that at the start, the number for first marriages was much higher than that of second marriages (350,000 and 150,000 respectively) and both the numbers increased by nearly 70,000 within a decade, making the total rose significantly from 500,000 to well above 600,000. The number for remarriages largely remained unchanged in the next 10 years before climbing sharply to over 250,000 at the end of the studied period.

By contrast, the UK saw a considerable downswing in the practice of getting married for the first time in the latter half of the period. The figure for this category dropped drastically from a high of 400,000 in 1995 and showed no signs of recovery ever since. As to the divorce rate, it grew continuously throughout the years. From just under 100,000 at the starting point, it rose twofold within the span of 5 years before mounting to a peak at roughly 250,000 in 2000.
