WRITING TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The table below provides statistics on several major metro (MRT) systems around the world.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main feature and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words
Given is a graph providing a comparison in terms of age, scale, and annual carrying capacity of metro systems in six different regions (namely London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles).
It is apparent from the information supplied that the more recently established metro systems are considerably shorter compared to older ones.
Looking at the details, completed in 1863, the London underground is the oldest system listed and also the biggest one, extending up to 1100 kilometres. Likewise, the Paris system – which has been operating since 1890 – is the second largest, covering a total length of 580 kilometres. In stark contrast, the Kyoto and Los Angeles metro, established in 1980 and 2001 respectively, are far shorter. The former is a mere 11 km and the latter is a negligible 14 km.
As regards yearly carrying capacity, it is interesting to note that the Tokyo metro system is able to transport some 1434 million passengers annually, which is higher than any other systems on the list. With 850 million passengers, meanwhile, the Paris metro has the second biggest carrying capacity. The two systems with the lowest capacity are those of Washington DC and Kyoto, which carries 70 and 11 million users per year respectively.
