The pie chart illustrated the percentage of people speaking a variety of languages on the internet in the year 2001, while, the table depicted the average number of online users in million compared to the overall world population on the yearly basis from November 1997 to August 2001.
In general, it is noticeable that the population of online users showed an upward trend from 1997 to 2001. Moreover, it is clear that English was the dominating language in 2001.
It is clearly seen from the pie chart that online users were 529 million in total in December 2011, and 43% of them preferred to use English which accounted for more than one fourth. On the other hand, every other language was shared less than 9% in decreasing order, Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, Korean, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Dutch. The lowest proportion related to Dutch speakers which is 2.1%. the other unlisted languages altogether accounted for less than 10%.
Moreover, the number of online users was 76 million in 1997 and accounted for 1,8% of the world population. These figures were doubled in 1998 and reached 147 million and 3,6%, respectively. This upward trend continued and the online user numbers rose to 513 million and the rate reached 8,4% in August 2001.
