Essay topics:

Young adults should be required to undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community. Would the drawbacks of such a requirement be greater that the benefits of the community and the individual young adults?

A year of compulsory internship or work experience is the prime requirement before joining a job in any industry. It not only refines the skills of a professional but also stresses on the importance of working for a greater cause than money. I firmly believe that a period of unpaid work experience is compulsory before working as a paid employee in any company or organization.
Beyond any qualms there are a myriad of logical reasons to support the view that unpaid compulsory work internship or work experience is necessary in any profession. Post-graduation is the period when a fresher from the college not only leans to build relationship with colleagues and acquires the importance of team work but they also absorb the value to quality work without thinking about their own monetary benefits. For example, a dentist is required to complete a rotational internship before they can actually work in any organization. It gives them an opportunity to learn new techniques and also to work selflessly for the betterment of the patients without thinking about personal gains. Even the patient also benefit from such deeds as they often receive free treatment from such interns therefore, making it a win-win situation for both.
On the contrary, some argue that unpaid work culture is likely to make the professionals demotivated towards their work and they are likely to lose interest in their profession and some might even quit their career as they cannot cope up with the financial burden of the loans they have taken to complete their graduation in the first place forcing them to join other industries where they get paid to repay their education loans.
In conclusion, unpaid work experience has its own pros and cons and it is up to the professional to decide whether they make it a learning experience to refine their skills or they just think negatively and feel demotivated. However, I believe that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages of compulsory unpaid work experience which the professionals are likely to learn in the future. But will the fresh college pass out students think this way? Still remains a question.
