Discussions are key to overall learning is an irrefutable fact. It not only broadens one’s mind by bringing in myriad of different avenue of seeing the problem, but also clears out our doubts. Keeping the class more engaging and helping in the holistic learning of students, discussions are inevitably preferable in classes. Though, some people might prefer having just the lectures, and no discussion, in the class, I would rather prefer having discussions between the professor and the students rather than lecture because of the following reasons.

First and foremost, instead of having lectures, where students are not prepared before the class and their understanding of the subject solely depends on what the professor teaches, I believe having discussions, in place, will be a better option. Students can come prepared about the topic before the class and can discuss their observations or doubts in the class. This will enhance their knowledge, as they will be able to clear their doubts or learn about a topic, which was not comprehensible by them, from their peers. For an example, in my university, we used to have one day of group activity, wherein, students used to come prepared on the subject and discuss their view points and doubts in the class. Personally, I feel, this helped me immensely than just the lecture.

Furthermore, when there are discussions in class about a topic, different students try to put up their own understanding of the topic. This improvises their level of thinking as they get acquainted with varied ways of comprehending the same thing. The veracity of this claim can be verified by considering the example of group discussions that happens during the class project. Definitely, students learn the most when they indulge in group projects because of rigorous brain storming and discussions with their friends. If the same is implemented for all the credits and the lectures are replaced by just the discussion, imagine the proliferation in productivity of the students!

Lastly, lectures can get quite boring and monotonous with only a single person speaking. But, with discussions, multiple people throw their ideas and understanding on table. It is sometimes possible that the ideas of one student conflict with the other’s ideas, in which case the students will be keen in proving their point or analyzing the point which they forgot to ferret. Such engaging activity can for sure bring more efficiency in the learning process, which otherwise can be quite daunting for students to concentrate or apprehend.

In summary, for various reasons such as enhancement in the learning process of an individual student, group discussions and more engagement among the students, discussion seems more preferable over having lectures in the class. I, personally, prefer to discuss actively than to listen to lectures all day.
