Essay topics:

In 1939 an archaeological excavation in southeastern England revealed a grave dated to the seventh century C.E. The grave contained a 13-meter-long ship filled with jewelry and other precious objects.

Both the passage and the lecture are arguing whether the person buried in the grave excavated in southeastern England is King Raedwald. The author of the passage comes up with three reasons to support the opinion that the person is King Raewald. However, the professor of the lecture refutes them one by one, and claims that they are not convincing.

First off, the author argues that the dating of the things found in the grave fits the dead time of King Raedwald, and the coincidence strongly proves the theory. On the other hand, the professor holds the perspective that it's not easy to clarify the dates. It's difficult for scientists to pinpoint the date of King Raewald's death. The few records don't reconcile; one record is 25 years earlier than another. Moreover, whether the coins were put after his death is not proved. Therefore, we couldn't match the dates accurately.

Secondly, the grave is grand and the objects inside are splendid, thus suggesting the grave belonging to a relatively powerful king, King Raewald, according to the author. In contrast, the professor points out that this may be not true because there are not much reserved graves discovered, and we couldn't compare this grave with others to see if it's really that extraordinary. Besides, precious objects in some graves might have been removed or taken by robbers, so scientists are not sure whether the grave remains its primary look.

Last but not least, the author suspects that Raedwald was the first to turn to Christianity and used artifacts to remind his conversion, which matches the spoons and bowls, found in the grave, with famous Christians' names on them. However, the professor disagrees by stating that the position of the grave doesn't seem like Christian practice. What's more, Raewald might be not Christian himself, and the valuable artifacts might be received from other Christians as gifts.

To conclude, taking account of the arguments offered above, the professor identifies the defects of the reading material and clearly points out that the explanations given by the author are utter nonsense.
