In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya.

First solution offered by reading is to reestablish the torreya to same location, where it survived for ages. it is mentioned that northern part of florida has a particular microclimate, which have wetter and cooler climate that benefit to torreya’s growth. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts that these areas were strongly affected by global warming and wetlands located in florida became drier.
Second solution reading mentioned is to move the torreya to different environment where the temperature is cooler than florida’s microclimate. it is stated that some scientist believe torreya probably survived in far northern areas in the past. The lecturer, however, gives an example to contradict that argument and states that black locus moved north but it spreads so quickly and kills other species. Thus, relocations can bring out unpredicted outcomes.
The third solution in the reading states that torreya can be preserved in research centers and can be closely monitored for both protect the plant and research on it to maintain its existence. The lecturer, however, suggest that population will not be able to resist diseases. Furthermore, it is stated that in order to resist diseases, a plant must be genetically diverse and must have large population. Unfortunately, research centers do not have these capabilities and torreya cannot be survived from diseases
