In 1995 a microscopic fungus called phytophthora ramorum or P ramorum was first detected in the forests of the western United States P ramorum infects trees and causes particularly serious damage in oak trees in many infected oaks leaves wither rapidly la

The author of the reading passage proposes several methods to protect trees from the threaten of P. ramorum. However, the speaker in the lecture refutes those points and presents the limitations of them.

To begin with, the author claims that stopping P. ramorum spores from human-assisted spreading is an effective method. On the contrary, the lecturer counters this argument by emphasizing that installing scrubbers or washing shoes do not have a large impact on addressing problem. In addition to human-assist spread, water streams and rainfall could carry and spread spores in a long distant, which is difficult to control.

Secondly, the reading passage contends that fungicidal chemicals could protect oak trees by increasing their natural defenses against P. ramorum. Contrarily, the lecturer dismisses this idea as impractical. People need to inject chemicals repeatedly monthly to make them to last longer, which is impractical and expensive to practice in a forest with thousands of trees. This method is only practical for threes in small city park.

Finally, opposing to the author's third view that clearing and cutting infected tree to prevent the infection spreading is a way of protection, the speaker proposes that it would cause ecological damage, as those healthy and rare tree species which are vital to ecological system might be destroyed when practicing clear-cutting.
