51 - integrated - elephants surprising behaviors
Both text and speaking state the different ideas about astonishing behaviors of the elephants, the largest land animal in this era where we live. The passage mentions three beliefs, and on the other side, the lecturer refutes all the notions by the reasons which will be discussed in the next paragraphs.
First, the reading suggests that elephants are capable of knowing when they will die. As the final days approaching, they leave the herd and go off alone to the specific locations which are almost near water. Moreover, some discovery of many sites indicates the fact that elderly elephants indeed gathered in those special places, called elephant graveyard, and stay until they die. On the contrary, the speaker points out that as the elephants grow older, they teeth weaken and spoil; Therefore, they need to access to new resources of food that are softer. The need to have softer vegetation makes them travel to the new locations containing those plants where are often near water.
Second, the passage claims that elephants have artistic ability. Since they can hold a paintbrush in their trunks and move it on the canvas to draw recognizable objects such as flowers, other elephants, and even themselves, they are the only animals, other than human, to create art showing their environment. In the other hand, the professor refutes the notion mentioning that elephants are trained to paint things. In this regard, when they are stroking the paintbrush on the canvas, someone touches their ears to control the movement of the trunks. Since the elephants' ears are so sensitive, they can remember how to move the brush in order to draw lines that once have been taught to them.
Finally, the reading asserts that elephants have a fear of mice. These massive animals, based on the ancient writings, are more afraid of those small mammals than any other dangerous animals in their habitats like tigers and lions. Moreover, a recent experiment shows that a herd of elephants moved back and changed their way so that they avoid facing several mice. The lecturer refuses the idea, asserting that elephants react to the mice themselves. Since they do not know what mice are, they keep themselves away to reduce the possible danger threatening them. However, where the mice are common, and the elephants realize them, they no longer pose them as a threat and do not mind their presence.
