Advantages and disadvantages of selling fossils discovery to private collectors.
The reading and the lecturer talked about the advantages and disadvantages of selling fossils to private collectors. According to the reading, the hunting of fossils has turned into a great commercial business since the 18 century and people pay millions of dollars to own them. Thus, this action has been wretched to scientists and public people.
The lecture and the reading both agree that if private collectors keep owning all the petrified remains of ancient organisms, the interest of people to visit museums might drop. The lecturer thinks that the public should have more exposure to the fossil than less.
The passages stated that buyers are likely to pay huge sums of money just to own the rarest fossils discoveries, which gives disadvantages to museums and scientists to learn about extinct life forms. The lecturer disputed this point.
In contrast to the passage, the lecturer argued that scientists have to examine in detail the fossils first in order to be priced. Consequently, buyers cannot obtain fossils if scientists have not studied the fossils. The discoveries of fossils are being commercial so that made it easy for buyers to acquire them. Also, some institutions for example libraries and museums could obtain fossils as well to be displayed in their facility for the public.
Lastly, the passages claimed If fossils were given directly to collectors, they might have destroyed valuable evidence because they are uninterested in the meticulous evidence of the fossils. Meanwhile, the lecturer said that there are many fossils remaining undiscovered because scientists have not found the proper evidence yet. Therefore, scientists keep the fossils until they have performed the proper studies.
