The reading and the lecture are both about agnostids- a group of marine animals that is now extinct. The paleontologist could not determine how the agnostids behaved or what they ate through the fossils they found. The reading has three theories of their behavior. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these theories are not valid evidence.
To begin with, the author argues that agnostids were the free-swimming predators. They ate smaller pieces of other marine animals. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that agnostids cannot swim freely. Their sight ability is bad for swimming loosely. As a result, they cannot be a predator and eat their prey. Furthermore, they do not have other special body parts that can act skillfully. Even some of them are blind.
Secondly, the writer suggests that agnostids were seafloor dwellers because they are examples of primitive arthropods. The lecturer, however, rebuts that they cannot be seafloor dwellers. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that agnostids make large movements which is not a character of seafloor dwellers. Moreover, they were found in many different places. However, large movements do not make sense if they were seafloor dwellers. It means seafloor dwellers cannot swim widely unlike the agnostids.
Finally, the author posits that agnostids are parasites because there are many species of modern-day arthropods that exist as parasites. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is there is an apparent reason that explains the agnostids were not parasites. He notes that the parasites’ population is mainly limited. By the way, agnostids have numerous populations. Hence, it is not logical that the agnostids were parasites. Additionally, they were found in different places and have numerous counts.
