According to the reading passage, it is stated that extinct animals named agnostids are believed to be primitive arthropods relative of modern insects, and it provides some hypothesis about the way that agnostids were living. However, the professor in the listening part explains why the assumptions mentioned in the reading part were incorrect and refutes them by describing three reasons as follows.
First of all, the reading claims that agnostids are believed to be free-swimming predators, which were hunting smaller animal species. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this point by mentioning that the animals which live in open ocean, should have large eyes to track the preys, but agnostics had poorly small or nearly blind eyes. Moreover, they were in lack of other special organs, which help animals to catch the prey. Consequently, the idea that they were free-swimming predators cannot be true.
Secondly, the reading posits that since there are evidences that primitive arthropods were living on the seafloor, agnostids would have lived on seafloor too. The lecturer states that animals who live on the seafloor are not able to move fast, and they are localized in specific areas. In contrast, remnants of agnostids have found in the enlarged ecological areas. As a result, they do not occupy small places, so they do not settle on the seafloor.
Finally, the reading states that agnostics are a kind of parasits because there are a lot of modern arthopods which are identified as parasits. The professor in the listening part opposes this issue by explaining that parasites do not make large populations, because if there are too many parasites on a host, they will kill it and will lose their nutrition source. On the contrary, fossil debris purvey the information that there are vast amounts of agnostics' fossils. Hence, agnostics cannot be accebted as parasites due to their huge population.
