The reading and the lecture are both about airships, which are a type of aircraft that were popular many decades ago. While the author of the reading passage argues that offering innumerable boons, airships can be used in the future for several applications, the professor disputes this claim. He states that there several reasons that airships are not likely to be utilized in the near future. The lecturer casts doubt on the main point mentioned in the essay by providing three controversial reasons.
In the article, the writer begins by saying that not consuming fuel for vertical movement, unlike aircraft and helicopters, airships are more fuel efficient. However, the professor repudiates this idea. He asserts that the ballon of an airship should be filled with lighter-than-air gases like hydrogen and helium. Both these gases have some drawbacks. Hydrogen is so flammable and caused many lethal accidents in the past. Helium is less flammable than hydrogen but is more expensive and produces little lift.
Furthermore, according to the reading passage, since airships can take off and land vertically, they do not need a runway and can pick up heavy cargo in remote areas, for instance, forests. On the other hand, the professor points out that in order to pick, for example, logs from the forest, the airship is needed to reduce its altitude slowly and stay steady. However, airships are large and light, and it is arduous to keep them steady. Particularly, in case of gusty and windy weather, they can be damaged.
Finally, the writer believes that airships are a decent substitute for satellites. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this assertion by contending that the maximum service ceiling of airships is about fourteen kilometers above the ground. At this altitude, there are drastic winds, and the weather is inauspicious. The airships have to consume most of their fuels to resist these strong winds. Accordingly, they should repeatedly descend to refuel, and they cannot offer the perennial service that satellites provide.
To sum up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the effectiveness of airships in the feature.
