Both the reading passage and the lecture combine to give a complete understanding of the negative effects of social media. To support this idea the author provides three cases that show definitely harmful consequences of using social media. The lecturer elaborates on statements made by the author and provides additional evidence.
The author begins by stating that the first negative effect is a false sense of connectivity among people. In the article, it is mentioned that communication and relationship standards on social media are lower than in real life. The lecturer points out that nowadays, using social media, people cannot truly distinguish between real and virtual lives. Moreover, in some cases, they even lost social skills.
Secondly, the author claims that social media is a place for cyber -bullying. This is mostly because of the fact that in the online world people do not fear to post things. The lecturer delves deeper into this statement and provides statistics that more than 30% of users have faced such bullying. And one of the reasons is the anonymity on the internet.
Finally, another negative consequence of social media is decreasing in human productivity. People tend to distract and check updates and news on social media. The lecturer makes the point that according to the latest research more than 2 bln dollars lost because of people wasting time on social media. Additionally, he supposes that great work could be done if these hours were dedicated to something valuable.
