Some people believe that in the sixth century, a man named Brendan the Navigator traveled from Ireland to become the first European to arrive in North America. While the reading supports this view, the lecturer does not.
The reading begins by saying that references in stories about Brendan’s trip correspond to places on islands that he would have traveled to on his journey, including the Faroe Islands and Iceland. The lecturer contends that the descriptions are general enough that they could refer to other places. For example, the stories mention an island of sheep, but that could be one of many places and not just the Faroe Islands. The lecturer concedes that a “burning hill” could refer to Iceland’s volcanoes, but points out that it could also refer to a totally different place where residents lit fires. In other words, the stories are not specific enough to confirm the details of the trip.
The second piece of evidence offered by the reading is the fact that researchers made a model of a boat using sixth-century Irish building techniques and successfully sailed the boat to North America. This evidence is greatly weakened by the lecturer’s explanation that the boat was not an exact replica. Since the boat was longer and had more sails than boats used during Brendan’s time, it might perform differently on a long voyage. That line of reasoning would have been stronger if the boat were one that actually might have existed then.
The third point mentioned in the reading is the presence of carved markings on thhe stones in North America. These markings could possibly be ogham symbols, or ancient writing left by Brendan’s group. The lecturer discounts this possibility because only some of the markings look like the ogham alphabet; other markings were images such as the sun, hands or trees that the Irish did not use in writing. With that in mind, it is more likely that Native Americans, who were known to carve such images on stones, made the lines in question.
To sum up, the lecturer casts doubt on all the arguments given in the reading passage for why Brendan was the first European to travel to North America.
