Broccoli is a vegetable that is popular throughout the United States, but it can be grown only in temperate climates with mild summers. Because of this limitation, 90 percent of the broccoli consumed in the United States is grown in the cooler regions of California, on the West Coast. It must be shipped 4:000 kilometers across the entire country to reach the populous East Coast
The author discusses the possible advantages of harvesting the broccoli on the East coast. The lecturer, however, refutes the assets mentioned in the passage, and refutes them by sepcific explanations.
First, the reading states that the new type of broccoli would be beneficial by reducing the expense of transformation from the regions where broccoli is grown to the East coast. The professor, on the other hands, rejects this idea, and states that it would not be beneficial. She states that, it is acceptable that the transformation costs would be cut and, and this broccoli may survive hot summers, but they may not cause the total price for the consumers be reduced. In fact, the farmers from the East cost may harvest low amounts of broccoli, so it may increase the final price for customers.
Second, the author states that the broccoli of the East coast may be more delicious for local people. The professor, conversely, believes that this notion would not be practical, too. She asserts that the funding for new broccoli comes from sources that people do not have a good experience about them. Indeed, in the past, these companies were responsible for some products with genetic modifications, and were completely unsuccesful. Thus, this bad background may bring about an offensive reaction from people to the new product, and they may decline it.
Finally, the passage states that the vegetables are easier and healthier to be consumed when they are fresh. The lecturer, in contrast, states that there is no doubt that it is prefered for the vegetables to be eaten right after production, but people in the East coast are already provided with a variety of different plants and vegetables. Thus, it is more benefical to teach them use those vegetables rather than a kind of brocolli which is not native to their local.
