Chaveliar memoir
The article and the lecture are both about the authenticity of the Chaveliar memoir. Second, the writer contends that there should be a huge difference between Chaveliar’s conversations with Voltaire as recorded in his book. The article notes that the written dialogue is only Chaveliar’s recollection after years, hence is not quite precise. The lecture, however, rebuts this point by asserting that Chaveliar wrote down everything he could remember every night after talking with Voltaire. As a result, the conversations published is not what recalled after years. This is evidenced by confirmation of a person living with Chaveliar that he usually consult his notes and journal during his writing of the memoir.
Finally, it is stated in the passage that Chaveliar’s getaway from prison in Venice is not through a hole in the ceiling as mentioned but thanks to his friends’ bribe to the jailers. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that other peers in the prison had even more powerful friends than Chaveliar did but none of them were likely to have escaped. He puts forth the idea that Venetian government had to repair prison’s ceiling after Chaveliar’s escape, suggesting that the causal effect relations between two events.
