Chaveliar memoir
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss about chevalier de Seingalt's memoir about his autobiography. Whereas the author feels that the memoir may not be accurate in its story, the lecturer challenges the claim made by the author and states that the article's explanation is faulty. The three points which
shows
doubts about the memoir in the article is refuted by the lecture.
Firstly, according to the reading part, there are proves about chevalier lending huge amount of money from a Swiss merchant. The article raises question about chevalier being rich as a rich man is unlikely to borrow money from others. However, in ther lecture, chevalier's taking loan froma merchant is justified by the point that he had wealths which are fixed assets and not cash money. Moreover, as he was addicted to gambling and partying, it is very likely that he spent all his money there and ran out of cash money. As it takes certain period of time to sell properties, he prefered borrowing the money and compensate later.
Secondly, the article
shows
doubt on the fact that the conversation between chavelier and Voltaire is not exactly as mentioned in the memoire. As the memoire was written after many years from the event, it is unlikely to capture all the conversations. On contrary, the lecture refutes the idea by stating that he used to write down on a daily basis about his events. Additionally, witnesses supported the idea that he used his notes and journals for writing the memoir which is why conversations can be captured even after so many years.
Finally, the author is skeptical about the event where chavelier escaped from the jail by making a hole in Italy. As he had quite good connection with the politicians, he could easily get a bail by offering bribe. On the other hand, the lecture denies the idea by arguing that there are other prisoners there who also had good political connection, yet they could not manage a bail through bribing. Furthermore, the government's old documents
show
that the ceiling had to be repaired immediately after chavelier's leave which advocates that the event was real.
