the chevalier's escape from the prison
The reading and the lecture are about the accuracy of the memoir written by chevalier. The author provides three theories about the accuracy of this memoir. The professor on the other hand is not convinced of this and casts doubt on the theories presented in the reading. He is of the opinion that this memoir is exactly accurate and precise.
To begin with, the author argues that the chevalier could not be as wealthy as he has described in his memoir. To be more specific, the article mentions that based on the evidence, the chevalier had borrowed a lot of money, so, he would not be so rich then. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture. According to the professor, the chevalier was really affluent as he has claimed and he spent a huge amount of money on his parties and gambles. Indeed, he earned this money by selling his properties; therefore, earning this money took a longer time and the chevalier was coerced to borrow money until having access to his own money.
Secondly, the writer disputes, that chevaliers written record in the memoir between himself and Voltaire cannot be reliable somehow. To delineate, the article mentions that the chevalier has written this conversation after a long time passing from it, hence, he would not be able to remember the precise dialogue and conversation passed between them. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes this notion by asserting that although the memoir has been writing years after meeting Voltaire however, the chevalier had recorded their conversation exactly the nights that they had talked. Therefore, it can be inferred that these records deserve to trust on them.
Finally, the author averts that the chevalier had a better choice to escape from the prison. Moreover, it is stated in the article that since he had loyal friends who could helped him to get away from the prison; notwithstanding, he did not require to demolish the prison’s ceiling in order to get away. In contrast, the lecture’s position is that this solution was not practical. The professor puts forth to the idea that other prisoners could not escape from the prison in spite of having reliable friends. Also, the lecturer presented this fact that, based on the documents the ceiling of the prison requires repairs right after his escape.
