Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has become a valuable historical source about European society in the eighteenth century. However, some critics have raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir. They claim that the Chevalier distorted or invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous than it really was.

The writing is about a memoir written by a famous but controversial figure, Chervalier de Seingalt. Since Chervalier met many important figures in the 18th century, the memoir is a good source of history of that time. But the writing casts doubts on the validity of the memoir with three claims. However, in the lecture ,the lecturer refutes these claims.
Firstly, The writing claims that the claim made by the memoir about Chevalier being very wealthy and speanding a great deal of money on parties and gambling, is false. This is because they claim that records show that Chavalier borrowed money from a Swiss merchant. The lecturer, However, refutes this claim by stating that Chavalier indeed possesed weath in the form of land and other possessions. But in order for him to spend money, he had to sell these posessions.so he resorted to borrowing to hold the parties. So borrowing doesnot make Chevalier poor.
Secondly, the writing claims that the conversations between Chavalier and Voltair had to have been inaccurate because the conversation happened a year before the memoir was written. And since it is almost impossible to rememeber a conversation word for word after such a long time it must have been inaccurate. Nevertheless, the lecturer disagrees, expounding that Chavalier was known to have kept journals every night after conversations. Hence, must have recorded his conversations with Voltair and later used these recording when finishing the memoir.
Lastly, the writing casts doubt on how Chavalier escaped Venice prison in Italy. They claim that Chavalier's claim that he made an escape by making a hole in the ceiling is false and he used bribes inorder to escape. However, the lecturer again defends Chavalier story stating that his story must have been true for two reasons. Firstly, he says that there were other prisoners who had more political connects than Chavalier but yet could not bribe their way out of the prison. Secondly, there are records in venice that mentions repairs of the cieling of the cell holding Chavalier. Thus, Chavalier must have escaped from the ceiling.
