Communal online encyclopedias represent one of the latest resources to be found on the Internet. They are in many respects like traditional printed encyclopedias collections of articles on various subjects. What is specific to these online encyclopedias, however, is that any Internet user can contribute a new article or make an editorial change in an existing one. As a result, the encyclopedia is authored by the whole community of Internet users. The idea might sound attractive, but the communal online encyclopedias have several important problems that make them much less valuable than traditional, printed encyclopedias. First, contributors to a communal online encyclopedia often lack academic credentials, thereby making their contributions partially informed at best and downright inaccurate in many cases. Traditional encyclopedias are written by trained experts who adhere to standards of academic rigour that nonspecialists cannot really achieve. Second, even if the original entry in the online encyclopedia is correct, the communal nature of these online encyclopedias gives unscrupulous users and vandals or hackers the opportunity to fabricate, delete, and corrupt information in the encyclopedia. Once changes have been made to the original text, an unsuspecting user cannot tell the entry has been tampered with. None of this is possible with a traditional encyclopedia. Third, the communal encyclopedias focus too frequently, and in too great a depth, on trivial and popular topics, which creates a false impression of what is important and what is not. A child doing research for a school project may discover that a major historical event receives as much attention in an online encyclopedia as, say, a single long-running television program. The traditional encyclopedia provides a considered view of what topics to include or exclude and contains a sense of proportion that online "democratic" communal encyclopedias do not.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to what type of encyclopedia is more essential, accurate and important. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that traditional printed encyclopedias are important than online encyclopedias. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes online encyclopedias better than traditional printed encyclopedias and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that online encyclopedias can be written persons which have lack academic credentials. So ,there are huge chances to errors. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states the traditional encyclopedias is not perfect as there are no chance to correct the text but in case of online encyclopedias there are huge chance to correct the mistakes of writings. He goes on to say that any error in online encyclopedias is corrected by the professional writers and keeps updating for all the time.
Secondly, one group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that there are no security in the online encyclopedias because any one can change the text. Of course, though, not all experts in this sector believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states the crucial topics of the online encyclopedias are protected . Additionally, he notes that it cannot be changed for its constant structure.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that the online encyclopedias allow many unimportant topics and create complicated situations in any topic . Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that it is good to allow any statement in any topic because it only be possible as the huge place in online encyclopedias. For this huge place, any topic can be included in online encyclopedias.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about encyclopedias. It is clear that they will have trouble, in case of finding common ground on this issue.
