The writer firstly introduced the fact by saying that decline in book reading impacts the intellectual stimulation. He believes that literature encourages us to exercise imagination, empathize with others and etc. On the other part, the speaker states on this point that reading books doesn't guarantee intellectual growth. There are number of other good literature sources based on science, political articles which are well written up and provides high quality to readers.
The reading passage mentions that now days people are more likely to watch television or music videos instead of reading books which is lowering the level of culture whereas the speaker argue this by saying that there is plenty of sources like music, movies which provides the intellectual culture. Hence by reading and listening other sources doesn't lower the standard culture.
By addition to other points, writer says that reading less literature impacting on writers too, that publishers invest less and this caused few serious writer to come. On the other hand, speaker believes that the impact on writers is the author's fault as modern literature is difficult to understand due to people read less which is impacting investment.
