Declining sea otter population

Essay topics:

Declining sea otter population.

The article discuss the decline in the number of sea otters, which are small mammals lives along the western coast of North America to Alaska. Writer propose that the pollution is the key factor responsible for the population decline, while the professor support predator theory and deny each of the claim made in the passage.
First, writer states that along the Alaskan coast, the presence of oil rigs, and the pollution from other indsutry has caused the decline in the sea otter population. It also sate that there is increase level of pollution in the water sample of these sites. However, the professor disagrees. She explains that in case of pollution to be the main cause, there should be a lots of dead sea otter at the beaches as a result of wash off, but there was no such case found. She thinks that this should be case with the predator also, as they would have gotten infected.
Secondly, passage claims that other sea mammal along the Alaskan coast are also declining, which support the pollution theory. It also mention sea orcas that because they prefer whales, there case is an exception of pollution theory. Professor thinks that this is not the case. According to her, because of the human intervention, the number of whales has decreased drastically, and this is also the case with other sea mammal such as, sea lion, and seals. So the sea otters are only available for orcas to prey on.
The passage also states that there is an anomaly with the decreased number of sea otters ay Alaskan coast and this is because of ocean currents and other environmental dactors that may have caused the uneven pattern of pollutant concentration. The professor rebuts this argument. She thinks that this uneven pattern describe even better the predator theory. Because sea orcas are very large in size, they do not come to shallow water, and in this region the number of sea otter is comparatively better.
