Did bees a type of insect exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago Such a theory is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests The structures have been found inside 200 million year old fossilized trees i

Undoubtedly, history of first bees on the world is a controversial thing among scientists. More specifically, the writer puts forth on the claim that there were no bees 200 million years ago on the planet earth. However the professor point out that the are some serious flaws with the writer's claim. She more or less addresses the problem with each point made in the reading.

To begin with, the writer claims that no fossil remains of actual bees have ever been found that date to 200 million years ago. But the professor refutes with this point and says that bees bodies can turn into the fossils only in proppers resin from special trees, but in that period of time, no trees with that kinda resin existed.

Secondly, the author points out that there was no flowering plants in that period, and since bees and flowering plants have evolved a close, mutually dependent biological relationship, it is unlikely bees could have existed in that time. The professor, not surprisingly though, believes that bees were feeding from none-flowering plants back then. She thinks bees were adapted to todays flowering plants as their main food later.

Finally, the reading states that structures of founded fossils lack some details, for example, chambers of modern bee nests are closed by caps that have a spiral pattern, but the fossilized chambers lack such caps. Then again, the professor stays on the other side of the argument and says that maybe there are some differences between current nests champers and those from that period, but studies showed that both of them have the same water-proof material in them.

In conclusion the author and the professor hold opposing views about fossils of bee nests.
