Did bees (a type of insect) exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago? Such a theory is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests. The structures have been found inside 200- million-year-old fossilized trees i

The reading and the lecture are both about a 200 million-year old fossil that resembles like bees’ nest resulting to existence of bees long time ago. The author of the reading feels that this is not a fossil of bee’s house. The lecture challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that bees existed in the past.

To begin with, the author argues that the earliest preserved body of the bee is 100-million years old. However, the fossil was found 200-millions ago. So they are not matched. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says 200-millions year ago, the trees that provides preservation of fossils were very rare. Hence, they couldn’t preserve that time.

Secondly, the writer suggests that 200-million years ago, There were no flowering plants, thus, this means the bees can’t live. Because the bees can’t exist without flowers. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that they can live in that environment. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that there are fern or non flowering plants. Therefore, the bees can exist that environment.

Finally, the author posits that the fossil they found is not detailed or lacks evidence. They don’t have spiral caps which modern bees have now. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is they don’t have spiral caps is right, but they have same chemical that can make special water proof chambers.
