Directions: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain
how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our
solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our
Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the
best colonization option for a number of reasons. Low Gravity: To begin with, asteroids are ofter much
smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as
strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or
Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would
also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less
_fuel for the trip back to Earth. Mining Valuable Metals: Next, some asteroids are rich in valuable
elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid
colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or
businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and
sending them back to Earth. Easy to Reach: Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization
because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically
come within or near Earth's orbit. Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these
asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like
Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.

The article and the lecture both deal with the opportunity of sending people to asteroids.
While the author of the reading offers three specific reasons to think that the asteroids are the best colonization option, the lecturer opposes the writer's claims. In his opinion, the possibility is really low.

First, the writer claims that asteroids are smaller than planets, and therefore, the gravity there is low so the spaceship will not be pulled as strongly as it would be on the Moon or Mars. Furthermore, it is stated in the text low gravity will allow to carry more equipment; the author also adds that it would be easier for the craft to take off so that it would need less fuel. In contrast, the lecturer argues that the low gravity can affect people's health, which is a huge drawback. According to the professor, the problem is that people would lose muscle mass; on top of that he maintains that low gravity can also lead to bond density loss.

Second, the writer asserts that there are good sourses of preciouse metals, which could be mined and transported to Earth, and by this enabling the colony to pay for the cost of their support. However,  the lecturer calls this argument into question by saying that the cost of the supporting itself would be high. On top of that he claims that the price of the metals may not remain the same. In other words, it would not be very profitable.

Finally, the author remarks that some arteroids are really easy the reach as they come near Earth's orbit from time to time. Moreover, a number of them get closer to Earth then our Moon, therefore it would be more afordable, in comparison to Mars for example. As opposed to the writer, the lecturer holds that it would be not easy to return from the asteroid, as its orbital pads indeed may come close to the Earth, nevertheless it then can move far away from our planet. He also highlights that Marrs is not like that as it is more stable.

To summarize, it is stated in the text that asteroids can be a good option for colonization, while the lecturer thinks the opposite.
