Arles bust
The article and the lecture both deal with Arles Bust, the stature which was found in 2007 in France and which is thought to be a stature of Julius Caesar.
While the author of the reading offers three specific reasons for thinking that it is indeed the stature of the Roman Emperor, the lecturer opposes the author's claims. In her opinion, this assumption is not likely to be true.
First, the writer claims that the statue has been dated to the century in which Caesar lived. Furthermore, it is stated in the article that the style is also consistent to the age and that the sculpture is very high quality. In contrast, the professor argues that it's not a logical argument due to the fact that a plenty of statues were made in that period of time. Additionally, she mentions that it could be a statue of a rich man therefore it's quality is high.
Second, the author mentions that the Roman Emperor had wide political connections to the Arles. On top of that, he adds that the sculpture was probably tossed in the river soon after his death. The lecturer agrees with the fact that Caesar had many connections to the region. However, the lecturer calls his second argument into question by saying that the sculpture was found with some other pieces of art which are dated to the third century, and therefore it is more likely that it was thrown in the river in the same time.
Finally, the writer asserts that the face of the statue is almost identical to the face from the coin, where the Emperor face imaged. In addition to that, in the article it is mentioned that the appearance features are the same. As opposed to the author, the professor holds that coin is small and the face image is not clear on it and the picture is only from the side, so we cannot claim that the sculpture indeed belongs to Caesar. She highlights that many Romans had similar features as the stature's face has.
To summarise, while the text states that the sculpture belongs to Julian Caesar, the lecturer thinks the opposite.
