Do computers think?
The passage and the lecture discusses about a funamental question - can computers think? They both discuss about Turing test, which is used to answer this qestion. The passage described the test as people interact with a computer without knowing if there is someone in the other end. After the discussion, the human says is it a human or a computer. But the lecturer questions the validity of Turing test.
The passage claims that human and computer behaviour is distinguishable for a human by interacting blindly. But the professor brings an example where an english speaker interacts with a chineese person. Chineese words would seem meaningless to the english speaker. But if he has enough information, for instance, the meanings of chineese words, he would understand it. In the same way, if a computer is given enough information, it can interact like a human with supplying answers that look like human answers. Thus, it would pass the Turing test.
The passage also claims that the computer needs to be creative to pass the Turing test. But the lecturer contends that a person is not always creative. So, if the computer is given the information about what to say after what, it might pass the Turing test by talking like a normal person. So, artificial intelligence might pass the Turing test by saying sequenced words that are analyzed from previously given informaton.
In these ways, the professor explains why Turing test isn't a reliable test for deciding whether can computers think or not.
