Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.”
Todays, we live in a world in which friendship and communication between people play an important role in individuals’ lives. There are different viewpoints about importance of keeping old friends in comparison to making new friends. As far as I am concerned, although making new friends is of great importance during one’s life, keeping friendship especially with a lifelong friend is more crucial than that to live a happy, peace, and successful life. The basis of my view is based on several reasons, three of which – that is – more trust and learning to bear other's opposing opinions are the most outstanding ones.
It is crystal clear that trust is the most vital feature for a mutual extraordinary and prosperous friendship, and building a relationship based on trust is impossible except by the passage of time. Trust is a “golden chain” which keeps people together in difficulties, whereas the absence of trust within a new relationship makes it vulnerable. For instance, consider a person who makes a new friend and meets him or her just for few times. Since knowing is a time-consuming process, there is a little doubt that they cannot know their character adequately for a long time. As a result, if a complicated situation took place, how they would be able to trust and speak about that problem without enough understanding of their beliefs, behavior, interest, and to name but a few. However, an old friend is a person to whom one can trust when he or she needs to speak with someone else from their family members and tell all of their secrets and problems.
Another reason that reveals the priceless of keeping old friends is learning the ability to bear opinions which are different from ours. As all of us know, we live in a world which is full of different religions, beliefs, and attitudes. Hence, the ability of being compatible with different people who have opposing views is really critical in persons’ lives. For example, when an individual keeps a relationship with him or her old friend who has an opposing opinion, they practice to being more compatible. Accordingly, they will learn to behave in a way which is more beneficial for their social relationship, which leads to a much more satisfying life.
All in all, with all this taken into account, I believe that although new friends make one’s life better and happier, keeping old friends has a higher priority for several reasons, among which having trust in a relationship and practice to be compatible with different viewpoints are of great importance. Old friends are like a gift which God has given to us and we should not take them for granted.
