Driverless cars

Essay topics:

Driverless cars

The article states that driverless cars are the new future and their use of sensors and computers while minimizing human input will have a more positive impact in our lives. The passage supports this by saying it will reduce human error, be better for the environment and give drivers time to focus on other tasks. However, the lecturer explains that these cars are not actually significantly safer or better for the environment, nor for the mental well being of drivers and refutes each of the author’s reasons.

Firstly, the reading claims that according to a study, these vehicles would reduce human error by the usage of complex softwares and be a lot safer. The lecturer refutes this point by saying that all computer softwares are also written by humans and human error can translate into these programs as well. They are just as prone to error. They won't reduce the number of accidents nor improve safety. He states that last month, the same car which was provided as an example in the passage, hit another vehicle and was all over the news.

Secondly, the article posits that these cars are more beneficial towards the environment,as they can communicate with other cars to reduce pollution caused by traffic. However, the lecturer says that if these cars become a norm, more people will start driving. The age restriction towards driving wont matter anymore. According to the lecture, more people in cars equals more pollution than what it claims it can reduce.

Lastly, the reading passage says that passengers will get more time to watch videos or catch up on work while in the car instead of focusing on driving. The lecture opposes this point by explaining that most people find driving relaxing and enjoy listening to music or the radio. They like this distraction in the middle of their busy work lives. This is in fact supported by a study. We also learn that having this extra time will just provide another space to think about work and do work. It will not provide a much needed break.

So to conclude, it is a complex issue with people on both sides and while driverless cars might be progressing and becoming more advanced, there is still a long way to go towards making their usage beneficial towards drivers and for the environment.
