The passage and the lecture are both about whether the wood companies in the United States would choose the eco-certification on the wood products by an international organization. The author of the passage feels that most of the companies in United States would not opt for it. The Lecturer challenges the points made by the author. He is of the opinion that American wood companies will sure take certifications.
To begin with, the author claims that American consumers do not generally pay attention to the advertisements about the certifications, therefore, they would not purchase eco-certified products. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He argues that American consumers do look for certified products and distinguish between certified and no-certified. Moreover, people who care about environmental issues would surely buy the product that is eco-friendly.
Secondly, the author contends that people will not buy certified wood products because of the high prices. It is mentioned in that passage that companies pay to the certification agency to earn eco-certification, and it would make the product costlier. However, the lecturer rebuts this by claiming that though the cost of the products matter, the consumers buy the eco-certified product as the price difference is not huge. He elaborates on this by bringing the point that studies revealed that when the price differnce is little, the consumers take another factors into consideration.
Finally, the author posits that American companies would not make much profit in this busness because most of the product they sell is domestic. The paragraph mentions that American wood companies do not sell thier products abroad. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that foreign companies would also try to sell their products in the United States. Therefore, taking eco-certification would be beneficial.
