Experts have been discussing whether a law restricting the importing, buying and selling of nonnative species should be abolished. The passage opposes the law because it forces pet owners to turn their pets over, spends a lot to implement, and applies a single standard to the entire country. However, the lecture finds all three criticisms unreasonable.
Firstly, the lecture asserts that the law won’t have an affect on pet owners. Although some people owned pets that are nonnative to the environment, the law was aimed to control the number of buying of nonnative species. For example, if people kept tropical fish as pet, the government won’t taken them away, but to control the buying of such animal since it is nonnative to the country. Therefore, pet owners are allowed to keep their pets as long as they won’t damage the entire eco-system.
Secondly, the lecture claims that the financial loss caused by the law is worthy. Although the law may have expenditure on checking the safety studies of pets, a more portion of the expenditure will be used in eliminating existing harmful species. For example, many pythons, which are native to Asia, search their way into the wild after being abandoned by its owners and destroys many native species in the country. As a result, the government was forced to spend money on removing the species than safety checks.
Finally, the lecture undermines the idea that the law is unfair to be applied to the entire country. Although species like the Brazilian rabbit pose little threat to areas where it wasn’t used to live, there are other factors which in fact poses a greater threat to the native animals. Just take the Brazilian rabbit for example, it carries a special type of disease that other native species cannot defense. As the disease spread around the country, 99% of the native animals were threatened to death, which brings them to the near vicinity of extinction. Consequently, the law should be seen as a standard in every part of the country.
