The reading and the lecture are both about the cloud seeding, a solution in the problem of farmers which is hail. The cloud seeding is for reducing hail from clouds by adding silver iodide into the cloud. However, there is an argument about this solution. The author of the reading feels that cloud seeding is effective to protect crops from hail. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that cloud seeding is absolutely not effective for this crisis.
To begin with, the author argues that cloud seeding was effective in laboratory vexperiments. When the scientists put silver iodide into the cold water vapor, it produced snow instead of the hail. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the silver iodide actually prevents anything forming from the cloud. In other words, it can prevent producing rains in the cloud. It can be another problem, lack of water, to farmers who are cropping.
Secondly, the writer suggests that evidence from Asia also shows that cloud seeding is effective to prevent damages. In the article, it is said that there are several cases in urban areas that cloud seeding has been successfully used to control the hail in some Asian countries. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that as comparing the circumstances between the United States and several Asian countries, other results are bound to come out. The cropping area between both countries are different. In Asia, the cropping area is almost urban. In contrast, the agricultural range in the United States is rural. One of the factors that can affect is pollution. We all know that rural areas have less dirty air than urban places. Hence, it would have been inevitable to fail.
Finally, the author posits that the local study in the United States shows absolutely successful results of experiments. They did monitoring directly to observe the damage due to hail. The experiments discovered that the hail has reduced the impact of the hail compared to previous year. However, the lecturer position is this experiment is affected by variation of circumstance. He notes that there was natural variation in the environment. Therefore, cloud seeding had nothing to do.
