humpback whales
The reading and the lecture are both about whether humback whales use stars to navigate. The author believes that these whales use this technique for three reasons. The lecturer disagrees with the points made in the article.
According to the reading, humpback whales have highly complex brains, which means that they are intelligent. For this reason, he believes that these animals are smart enough to use stars for orientation. The lecturer disagrees with this specific argument. He points out that ducks, which only posess average intellect, can also use stars for the same reason. Therefore, he contends that using stars as navigation does not correlate with exceptional intelligence.
Secondly, the author mentions that when animals migrate, they need to maintain straight movement by using external objects to orient themselves. In the reading, it is said that because whales cannot rely on any land objects when they migrate, they use stars for orientation. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that there is biomagnetide in the brain of a humpbackwhale. He states that these whales use biomagnetides and earth's magnetic field to navigate and not stars.
Finally, the author posits that whales have an unusual trait: floating for several minutes with their heads above the water, which is called spy-hopping. He thinks that they do this to look at the stars and gather information to use for navigation. The lecturer, however, says that sharks also do the same thing, but they do not migrate or look at the stars. He also mentions that sharks spy-hop during the day when no stars are visible.
