The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about whether humpback whales use stars for navigation or not. Considering this, the author provides three reasons to prove this theory. The professor, on the other hand, categorically denies whatever mentioned in reading through citing several reasons.
First, both the passage and the lecture talk about Intelligence of humpback whales. According to the passage, humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to utilize stars for navigation. The lecture, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that intelligence does not have any connection with the ability to use stars. For example, although some bird species and dogs use stars for navigation, they have average intelligence. Therefore, using stars for navigation is not a sign of intelligence.
Second of all, both the author and the professor discuss humpback whales migrate in a straight line. The passage goes on to mention that humpback whales use stars to keep their migration path in a straight line. Nonetheless, the lecturer supports a contradictory view as compared to that presented in the reading; she describes that humpback whales stay in a straight line during the migration by some external objects or forces but this external force is not stars. Humpback whales can sense the magnetic field because of the existence of a special organism in their brain. Thus, the magnetic field is the main reason for this straight line, not stars.
Eventually, the reading and the lecture both discuss unusual behavior that humpback whales show. The author of the reading passage states that humpback whales do spy-hopping to watch the position of stars in the sky. However, the speaker refutes it, saying that sharks perform this behavior too but this animal does not migrate and do this behavior for finding prey. Moreover, she asserts that sometimes humpback whales do spy-hopping in the morning and in this time stars are not visible in the sky.
