International trade
The article introduces the topic of transportation used in the international trades, and about their advancement. The author states that many countries are now using autonomous containers which are without crew and is used for transportation of goods. The writer says that, there are many advantages of the crewless container over to crewed container. However, Lecturer opposes the statement of the author and attacks on each advantage that is made in reading section.
Firstly, the author says that crewless cargo ships would reduce the cost for shipping companies. As, the ships has to pay for the human crew; on top of salaries, they have to be provided with food, sleeping quarters, climate control etc. But lecturer believes that there are flaws in the authors opinion and states that crew does not increase the cost of companies but save the money for company. The cargos has to travel for long period of time during their voyage to destination. During such long period of time the many parts and equipment’s of the cargo requires repairment. Such repairment are made by human crew and made the cargo to reach destination. So, If human crew would not be available such repairment during journey would not be possible and then only it may increase the cost.
Secondly, The writer says that the crewless ship can also be less attractive to pirates. Pirates usually earn money from travelling cargo by ransoming the crew members of the ship rather that stealing the containers and their equipment. But the lecturer criticize this view of author and tells that in present time there are many high tech pirates who can easily destroy the GPS system of crewless cargo and can contort them to any direction they want . This also without going to the ship and just by sitting on a far Computer. Lecturer further adds that such crewless cargo can be boon for the pirates.
On coming to third point, Author states that crewless ships would be less likely to get accident. And he further adds that most of the accidents in ships occurs mainly due to the human error and due to indolent nature of the crew. He says that crew members reacts slowly to the problems and lead ship to accident. Furthers, He says that crewless ship can use sensor and computers to detect the obstacles and can avoid accident. But, Lecturer rebuts this view and says that computers can only think logically but if the instant problem will arise than human can deal it more sensibly than computer. Lecturer further adds that during the long course of ship there might occur such circumstances where the human can deal better than computer.
Coming to end, As we can see author and lecturer holds very different opinion on use of crewed or crewless container.
