Is it better to work in teams?
The lecture talks about a research done by a company for a period of six month to testify the effectiveness of team work in increased productivity and it’s effects on the team. The results were quite the contrary to what the passage provides.
The overall performance of the team decrease, many went free ride and offered no help to the team and if the team were to produce some positive result, the accomplishment were equally shared among the team, to the detriment of those who worked hard to make things work. This went against what the text suggested where being in a group would bring a more correct, creative and risk taking results based on group sharing responsibility and the wide range of knowledge, experience and skill of the team members.
Things also went more slower and decisions made when there were comprise were often in favor of the influences within the group. This lead to good or correct suggestions being dropped, and argument against bad ideas cut off to please the leader of the group. This resulted in often bad decision, leading the group to fail, sharing the responsibility even those who were against the idea initially. This again goes against what the text suggest would happen, where as a result of larger resources, things would go faster, the team would be more contend to follow and work harder for a consensus decision rather than one imposed and people who brought the right contribution who be able to shine within the group as their actions might have a bigger impact with larger resources.
Unfortunately as the case study provided by the lecturer shows, what were expected in the paragraph did not really occur and often to the detriment of the members.
