The long-term use of sucralose can cause harm to the immune system, especially in children.
The text and the lecture offer two opposing views about the pros and cons of the consumption of sucralose for humans. While the reading passage lists three disadvantages for the sucralose, the professor repudiates all the given reasons and asserts that the consumption of sucralose is both safe and beneficial for losing weight.
First, the article posits that sucralose causes thymus to shrink, thereby damaging the human's immune system. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this reason by explaining that, in the reading's cited studies, there were no reported harm due to consumption of sucralose, unless they were eaten in large quantities. For example, if the amount of sucralose used by rats was scaled to human's size of body, a human might eat 4000 packets of sucralose per day for a month before its thymus to get damaged. Thus, eating sucralose is not harmful for the immune system.
Next, the author claims that sucralose is a kind of organochlorines which are toxic chemical substances for living creatures. In contrast, the professor elucidates that sucralose is in some ways different from other organochlorines because it is not absorbed by body's tissues, therefore they do not accumulate in the body's tissues. For this reason, their amount never reach the level which can impose risks to the health of a person. Based on this argument, sucralose cannot poison human beings.
Finally, the passage declares that eating sucralose is not such beneficial for losing weight because it keeps people's eagerness for consuming sweet foods. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects this assertion by stating that there is some discrepancies between sucralose and other types of artificial sweeteners. According to the lecturer, sucralose will not break down under the effect of heat, in contrast to other types of artificial sweeteners. For this cause, people can bake cakes and cookies using sucralose, and so they can keep in track with their diets.
